Random thoughts about injustices

October 28th, 2008

Related to the actual incident all over Austrian News about the Tramway Driver on Line 1 who ended a speech with “Sieg Heil”:

One Tramwaydriver makes a bad & stupid joke and looses his job and maybe also gets punishment by the law and is all over the news. Somehow I think he is a poor guy, who maybe watched to much Sterman & Grisseman and didn’t realize what the difference between these two and him is.
Why I think he is a poor guy?

Because there are some politicians which say “Ausländer raus!” and other things (or praise the working environment in the third reich) and what do they get for it?
They get a good salary as Nationalrat and when they die they are nearly praised as a Volksheld by a whole Bundesland.

So “Wiederbetätigung” will be punished roughly and Xenophobia not?

Somehow strange all in all, isn’t it? I find the media coverage of this horrible.
I was there, and I didn’t really see that the people where laughing and cheering about this bad joke.
In reality the atmosphere on the last round around the ring, after his speech was very depressing, people talked about him and where trying to find out how he meant it.

I agree with the decision of the Wr. Linien to cancel his contract, but if he get’s punished for it, then I’d like to see much more people get punished for their statements.

BarCamp Vienna 08 - Impressions after 1 1/2 days

October 5th, 2008

Yesterday, the BarCamp Vienna 2008 started. It is the first BarCamp I am attending and after one and a half day I’m trying to put the experience (which was much greater than I expected) in words.
As there is not much time (lunch will be ready soon) just some short impressions/thoughts:

1) Twitter is really a useful tool for such Conferences. Everyone is tagging their Tweets with the Tag #bcv08. You can find all Tweets with that Tag on Twitter Search. Even if you are there and see what’s going on, it’s great to see what’s happening in other sessions or read other peoples thoughts about the session you are attending.

2) The Sessions are not everything. As every event, BarCamp is also a social Event and so there is much “networking” going on. But “networking” in a good & nice way. Soo many different people (Students, Founders of StartUps, People working in the IT Sector, Marketing People, Politicians,…) in one place makes the BarCamp such a great experience.

3) It’s interesting to get to know People you know by their blogs (or even people you “know” already since years through Online Communities) in person. As with many events organized by Online Communites which I attended, you feel like you already know the people you meet in person because of their “online presence”.

4) Somehow (probably because there are so many Bloggers here), by attending this BarCamp you find motivation to blog, you find out how useful Twitter can be and how to really use it. I twittered more in the last 1 1/2 days than in the 24 days before. The motivation to blog partly comes also from the fact that by Twittering for example about the BarCamp you have more attention from persons who before didn’t know your Blog and this way more people look at your blog or mention it in their blog. And due to the fact that I see that people are reading and at least partly interested in this blog, I’m more motivated to write Posts.

5) By attending such a “Conference” with your Laptop, you also change your style of Internet Usage. You no longer just browse randomly from website to website, you “report” about the conference via Twitter, IRC or Blog; watch the Twitter Search for the #bcv08 Tag, reply to people and twitter short thoughts about the Sessions or something else. In between you think what you will talk about in your Session and prepare a Presentation for it in the Evening. I think from now on I will more often take my laptop with me when I’m not at home and try to work with it on interesting things (read blogs/articles,write on twitter or on the blog,do university related stuff,…) and not just stupidly browse around. (There is a Word … wilfing or so for it … don’t have time to find it out now)

So these were my first experiences/impressions, Lunch is ready. Also another experience now after writing this Blog entry in a little bit of a “hurry” you find out that Blog Posts can be written fast. They don’t have to be perfect, better a not perfect Post than no Post.
My Session is at 2 pm in the yellow room, I’m looking forward to it :)

Barcamp Vienna 08

October 3rd, 2008

This weekend (4th and 5th of October) I’m attending the BarCamp Vienna. It’s my first BarCamp and I’m curious how it will be.
What is a BarCamp: Wikipedia Article BarCamp
More Informations about BarCamps in Austria: barcamp.at

I will try to twitter some of my Impressions of the BarCamp directly from there.

One of the rules of a BarCamp is: “If this is your first time at BarCamp, you HAVE to present.”
I’m not really reluctant to present, but I’m not sure if I know any interesting topic for this BarCamp. The only thing I could present about would be Couchsurfing, we will see, maybe I could present it as an successful example of a Virtual Community, more talking about the Couchsurfing Community and what we are doing and what we could do, instead of presenting what Couchsurfing is about (I think that’s not soo hard to find out anymore :) ).

Maybe someone wants to join forces with me and present something together? Maybe someone wants to give some input?

Let’s see how the BarCamp is on Saturday, I will do the “extension” of the “presenting” rule (”Ok, you don’t really HAVE to, but try to find someone to present with, or at least ask questions and be an interactive participant.”) on Saturday, let my first day at an BarCamp “sink in” and then think about presenting again Saturday evening.

Blogging,Twittering and Studying

September 30th, 2008

Blogging is something I feel I should do more often. In the last months I started reading more and more really good blogs and somehow I think I would like to share thoughts/ideas via this blog (or on my new Twitter Feed), but I’m to lazy for it.
Maybe this is also because English is not my mother tongue and it would maybe be easier to write in German. Don’t really know, will try to find out. For the moment I will blog in English.

Some words about Twitter (that I could not fit into Messages with a maximum lenght of 140 Characters ;-) ):
Some weeks ago I started reading more and more on Twitter and found it very interesting. I especially like the replies to other Tweets, because you find other interesting Twitter Users and the whole thing becomes more dynamic, more like if people would talk to each other in person.
Then I created my own account, and now I’m not sure about how to use it. Maybe I want to do it more often or not. From time to time doesn’t really make sense.

Studying is something that will also use up some time in the next months, because tomorrow the winter term starts at University, so I will be there more often again :)
Tomorrow I’ll attend the Beginners Day for Computer Science Students. Not really because I’m a real Beginner (already had 2 semesters to find out how some things work at the University) but more for the social component. Maybe I’m gonna meet someone I know, maybe some new interesting people, let’s see :)

Ohh and I changed this blog back to the standard theme because I just realized that the Fast Lane theme hides all the links … stupid theme, even though it looked so nice.

Update

July 18th, 2008

I wrote some while ago Updates about the progress of my “Studienberechtigungsprüfung”. So here is another one for everyone interested: It’s finished, since last Tuesday I’m officially studying “Software & Information Engineering”.
After my last math exam around end of June, the last exam missing was the Essay about a general Topic, which I had on the 8th of July.

I needed a little bit over one year for it. And it was a fascinating year. The idea to study, even though I already had the thought to one day do it already a long time, came up as such a small idea and all the exams (also some university exams for the first & second semester) went on so smoothly … I’m really surprised about … about the way all this worked out, about myself, …

So in October I’m starting my first semester as an official Student … till then I have holidays (at least from learning … I’m at the moment working around 70 hours per Week in Prater, which is really funny because you work outside and work with people and even though you don’t earn much per hour have a great time there and see “new working worlds”).

Conclusions

July 11th, 2008

So this is the last entry in the projectlog for my Seminary “Grundlagen Methodischen Arbeitens”.
I will try to wrap it up with some conclusions about the topic of E-Learning & Virtual Communities, partly related to the Seminary, partly non-related stuff that was coming into my head while thinking about these topics.

Seminary related Wrap-Up:

I never thought before that so many people were researching the topic of the combination of “E-Learning & Web 2.0″ or “modern E-Learning”.
Slidecasting is one of many projects in this area and I think that with more functions it will be more motivating and of better use for the Students.
But it could also be that the whole motivation by features/rating/membership-levels thinking is idealistic and that the only way to motivate Students is by giving them something back that can affect their grades (e.g. points).
And maybe another point is that some Students can never be motivated to take part in anything that isn’t necessary to receive a positive grade.

Personal Wrap-Up:

Especially the topic of Virtual Communties is a really big topic, which got me interested (maybe because I’m taking part/took part in many Virtual Communites ;-) ). There is then also the fact that some Virtual Communites also change to also be Real Life Communities. Even that alone (questions like “how to sucessfully motivate users to also join Real Life Meetings”,”why are some communties so sucessfull in motivating their users to also join meetings in Real Life”,…) brings up many questions which probably were already researched by many people.
Also I found out that Virtual Communties are nearly a 1:1 reproduction of the Real-Life. Including people who work a huge amount of time for the communites, but also the possibillity of a sort of “burn out” syndrom. People are still doing their voluntary work for a Community but did too much, so that they no longer really appreciate to do it.

Invent a Feature for Slidecasting

July 9th, 2008

The last task of the Seminary was to read the Paper about Slidecasting (Exploring the “Massive Multiplayer E-Learning” Concept) and then invent and present a new Feature for Slidecasting.

Our Idea was a Feature where you could send comments for Slidecasting via SMS.
The slides of our presentation can be found here.

Why send comments via SMS? Well, 99 % of the Students have their mobile phone in the Lecture, but only around 16 % have their Notebook in the Lecture.
So this could be a possibillity for more Students to make comments during the Lecture.

Disadvantages of this Feature would be that a SMS needs longer (even though not much longer, due to Students often writing SMS). Also even though many Students have a high number of free SMS per month or only pay 1 Cent per SMS, some pay around 20 Cent which is even though it’s not much, more than what you pay if you are using a Laptop and WLAN to make comments.

Advantages of this Feature would be a higher Quantity of Comments, because nearly every Student could make a comment and that the Students don’t have to take their Notebook to the Lecture.
Also we found out in the Seminary, that there could be the possibillity for Students to send in a Slidecasting Comment via SMS or MMS while they are on their way.

Invent a Motivation Strategy for an E-Learning System

July 9th, 2008

The next task was to think about all the Motivation Strategies presented in the Seminary and invent an implementation of one of these or a new Motivation Strategy for use in an E-Learning System, that motivates the Students and think about if it is “fake resistant”, and post it as a comment on the Blog of the Seminary.
My idea (english translation of my comment on the Blog):

ESPECIALLY FAKE RESISTANT, BUT ALSO MOTIVATING
GSI (the Course in which Slidecasting 2.0 is used) is a Course which is about diverse latest topics. Textcomments are interesting, but more interesting would be URLs with further Content to this topics (URLs are especially convinient because they can link to all sorts of Content [e.g. Pictures, Videos, Text ...]).
My idea relates mostly to the use of URLs as Content.
Due to the fact, that, while the Lecture, you don’t see what other people posted, it could be a sort of Qualitycriteria how often a Link was posted. Links which were posted by 5 People are most probably more interesting and relate more to the Topic, than links posted by only 1 person.
Eventually it would also be possible to don’t publish the comments in the Slidecasting System for a few days after the Lecture, so that also people without a Notebook have the possibility to post interesting Links without knowing if someone else found the Link before them.

In General I think an important factor for Motivation in E-Learning Systems for Courses like GSI could be, that there must be the possibility to create a comment out of Multimedia Content.

Motivation Strategies in Virtual Communities

July 9th, 2008

Task Number 4 was to read an assigned paper and introduce the main concepts of this paper to the rest of the Seminary.
We had to read the Paper User Motivation in Peer-to-peer Systems.

It is about Comtella, a P2P System for the exchange of resources, e.g. Papers, used at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada.
The problem with the system was that it’s technical functionallity was good, but there were not many Users online and due to this fact not many Resources were found.

The Team of Comtella looked for a Solution to this problem and tried to solve it by implementing a hierachical membership model, where Users get a higher Level when they do more for the Community (e.g. share Resources, stay online, …) and get better Functions with each level.

They implemented this motivation model into Comtella in a testphase for one course. The results of this testphase were that more users used Comtella more often and the Quanity of the avaiable resources increased, but also that the overall Quality of the resources decreased.

Why do people participate in Web 2.0/Virtual Communities?

July 3rd, 2008

The third task (even though it’s already a while ago, but I have to finish this projectlog soon) was to find out why people do participate in Web 2.0 and Virtual Communities. To find answers to this questions, we did some literature research in the Internet and bookmarked the pages with interesting answers on diigo.com

So I found the following pages:
1.) Criteria for using Web 2.0
2.) Virtual Communites: What and why?
3.) Motivating Users - Peekaboom and the ESP Game
4.) The Art of creating a Community

The first website lists some Criteria when it can be usefull to “add” Web 2.0 Elements to a Website. Mostly related to business websites, they also list user motivation as a main Criteria, for example by letting the users generate or share content and then do something with all the shared or generated content.
Website number two explains shortly what Virtual Communites are and lists some examples of Virtual Communities. Also it gives examples of what people do in Virtual Communites: Socialize, Work together or have conversations about diverse topics.
The site “Motivating Users - Peekaboom and the ESP Game” is about 2 Web 2.0 Websites, that try to motivate their users to tag pictures/parts of pictures by creating a game around the process of tagging.
The last website describes how to create a sucessfull Virtual Community.

So there are many answers about why people participate in Virtual Communties, some where described above and I think one of the biggest one is clearly motivation. If there is no motivation (in what ever form the creators of a Virtual Community choose), nobody will take part in the Community. While reflecting about this subject and wondering why some people invest as much (monetary) unpaid time as you would work in a part-time job, I found out that Virtual Communities are much older then Web 2.0 is and that people were already active in diverse Virtual Communites (Mailbox Systems, Online Games, Chatrooms, …) before the Web 2.0 “hype”. Now with “Web 2.0 Virtual Communites”  just much more people take part in them. And investing much unpaid time into a Community also already existed before Web 2.0, even before the Internet. Before the Internet (and also nowadays) some people invested their spare time into clubs/associations (in german called Verein). But nowdays with the Internet and newer Technologies like Web 2.0 more people can connect much easier and find people who are interested in the same topics as they are.

About Web 2.0 there is a very interesting video, made by the same guy as “A Vision of Students today” which I posted earlier in this blog:

What could Students do with their Laptops while Lectures?

April 21st, 2008

The second task was to find out what Students could do with Laptops in their Lectures? To find answers to this question, we used methods from the IDEO Method Cards.

The method I used for this task was “Predict Next Years Headlines”. So I asked some students and myself the question: “Try to think 1 year in the future. How could (in the future) Laptops be used usefully while Lectures?”

The results can be categorized into 3 different groups: technical infrastructure at the University, teachers and students.

Technical Infrastructure:

-) Electronic Whiteboards (where you can print out/save the information on it) instead of blackboards
-) Better Networkinfrastructure, more Poweroutlets

Teachers:

-) Create “Hypertext-Slides” (so that Students who look at the slides on their laptop can get more information by clicking on links)
-) Possibility for changing the presentation “on the fly” (e.g.: make additions to the slides in the lecture, make annotations directly on the slides, …)
-) Create Audio- & Videorecordings of the lecture (so that Students don’t have to record it and could catch up on a lecture they missed)
-) Create the posibility of direct electronic communication with teachers/assistants (e.g.: via messenger, irc, mail, …) in the lecture for questions (makes it easier than asking them alound when sitting in the last rows of big rooms). Answers to this questions should be made public because they are probably interesting for more than one student

Students:

-) Use a better software to take notes while in the lecture (e.g.: a software with that you can directly take notes on PDF files)
-) Use IRC chatrooms (e.g.: one for each room or one for each lecture) for communication with other students

These and other results brought up some interesting questions: If there is the possibility for class related stuff you can do with your laptop, how can the teacher still grab and hold the attention of the students? What are the reasons for students to visit lectures?

Interesting questions, maybe we will find some answers to them.

One of the answers to “What are the reasons for students to visit lectures?” was “So that they don’t miss something”. Miss what? Maybe something like this:

Hopefully not only because of such things :)

What are Students doing with their Laptop in a Lecture?

April 12th, 2008

As I mentioned in the introduction, this seminary is partly about “How to make use of Laptops in big (around 500 - 1000 people) Lectures?”. As more and more Students have Laptops, more of them are bringing them with them to Lectures.
So the first task for us (the participants of the seminary) was to find out: “What are Students actually doing with their Laptop in Lectures?”

The method I used to find answers to this question, was to ask friends and post the question in some Internetcommunities I’m regulary visiting.
The answers were very diverse, here is a Summary of the answers:

- take Notes (easier to organize and sometimes easier to read than handwriting, able to do a quick research on the topics while taking Notes)
- look at the presentation the Professor is holding (because it’s easier to read on the screen)
- surf the Internet & check e-mails
- do a Internetresearch on the topics of the Lecture (e.g. if the professor doesn’t know something or is unsure)
- prepare for upcoming classes or Presentations
- conduct a Presentation
- use the laptop for programming
- look up translations
- work on projects or use the laptop when needed in tutorials
- write silly notes in large font to flash the screen to the people in the back row
- play games

I also asked a pupil from a Laptop Class to answer the questions. The result was similar to the one at universities. And also in schools with Laptop Classes not many teachers are not really able to use the potential of everyone having their laptop with them and being online.

One conclusion the Students attending the Seminary draw after we put all our answers from different methods together was that the Students want to be at the Lectures (maybe because of social contacts;maybe because it’s still better to be in the Lecture and not fully concentrate on it than to not be there) but the usage of the Laptops is mostly the same as it would be at home.

Below you find a good Video called “A Vision of Students today”, which shows some the characteristics and problems of todays students:

Wordpress Themes

April 12th, 2008

So as you may have noticed, this blog now has a different theme. Many thanks to Sonja for looking out for nice Themes and choosing it. It’s really great, I even like the picture so much that I will keep it at least for some time.

But searching for a good theme is not easy. The usability of http://themes.wordpress.net/ is not the best of all and so many themes out there have bugs. Also this one, especially with the Smileys and SubCategories. But anyway it’s better than the standard theme.

Projectlog Introduction

April 11th, 2008

So this is the first entry in the Projectlog for the Seminar “Grundlagen Methodischen Arbeitens” which I’m attending at the Technical University Vienna.

The topic of the seminar is E-Learning and how to improve it. How to make use of “real” E-Learning and not only “Distance Learning”. It is held by Peter Purgathofer, who created together with two other people the Project “Slidecasting 2.0″, a Software to make use of laptops in big lectures and to make them more interactive.

time for an update …

April 11th, 2008

I just saw that I’ve not written into this blog for 8 1/2 months, well bloggin regulary is not so easy as it seems. So here is a short update about my life :)

University is going on smoothly and my progress on the Studienberechtigungsprüfung is good from my point of view. (Physics, English and Elective finished, 2 of 5 Mathcourses finished)

In a Seminary I’m attending we have to make a projectlog and so I will use this blog for it … but more in a seperate entry.

Wow!

June 28th, 2007

Hey,
I just realized that there are actually sometimes people who read this blog. Hurray! :)

Another Update: Had my english exam last friday, still no information if I passed it or not, but it looked easy.

Btw, can someone tell me why my ScribeFire is no longer working with this blog? What a pitty, it’s such a nice Tool :)

Short Update about my “Studienberechtigungsprüfung”

May 17th, 2007

Just a very short update. I did write in my last post that I did not have the written confirmation for the allowance to the “Studienberechtigungsprüfung”.

And now finally, I got it on Wednesday. So next step (till the beginning of the winter semester) will be my English exam.

I’ll keep you updated.

Life 2.0

May 12th, 2007

Another 4 Months without any Update to this blog … much things happened in the mean time and I hope that I will blog more in the future.

After returning from Prague and thinking about what to do in the next months I decided to don’t go on a really long trip. It was a decision travel lust vs. money & comfort. And money and comfort did win, so I did renovate my apartment (and I am still renovating) and looked for a new Job.
Which was not that easy. And was not really fruitful. Probably too many people out there looking for a job in the area of Systems Engineering for Microsoft Operating Systems.

But around the end of March I found a new destiny in life. I want to make the so called “Studienberechtigungsprüfung” (5 exams after which you can go to University and study) and study Computer Science.
At first it was just some idea, but after reading more and more (about the “Studienberechtigungsprüfung”, scholarship and Computer Science studies) I thought: OK I can do that, I can make these exams and afterwards start to study.

Also in the meantime I started to freshen up my programming skills and learn Java (which is needed at most Computer Science studies). Was not that hard to learn it, even though I didn’t really program since school, which is already around 6 to 7 years. But basic programming skills (like how if,then, else;for;while;… works) are hard to forget.

So after finally deciding (To which University do I want to go? Which study do I want to do?) and getting informations, I applied for the “Studienberechtigungsprüfung” around 3 weeks ago and already did the elective (which was to write an easy algorithm in Java). I still don’t have the written approval, but the Professor told me he will give his approval.

In Winter semester 2007 I will start some courses for the “Studienberechtigungsprüfung” (Math, German, Physics) for a Bachelor in Computer Science at the “TU Wien” and till then visit some university lectures to get a general feeling about University.

That’s why I subtitled my blog: Life 2.0 … it feels like that, the beginning of a completely different chapter in my life. Hope that it works out as I want it to, but I’m sure that it does.

All for now, next entry hopefully earlier than in 4 months :-)

Short Update on Travel Plans

January 6th, 2007

Hi People,

I did not travel for a long time (except some smaller visits to Bratislava), so I thought it’s time to go again on some trips.

Travel Plan:

07.01.2007 -  10.01.2007 Prague

After Prague I will either return home or more likely go somewhere. Wherever my intention (or travel partners) lead me.

Greetings,

Stefan

Herding sheeps in New Zealand

October 25th, 2006

I would like to, but the title is not what I’m currently doing. But it’s related to something that gave me think again about “the Trip”, about being on the road longer than the 3 weeks I’ve done this summer.

Mid of september I’ve quitted my job, to find a new work, where I can learn more and put my skills to a better use. Some days after sending a e-mail to everyone, telling them that I’ll , a colleague asked me: “What is it? A new job or India?” Funny question, but it gave me to think. The colleague already knew that I want to do a longer trip once in my life, and so she thought maybe this is why I quit. But I told her not this time, for some years I still want to work, but maybe in 2 or 3 years. Thats where my other colleague said: “Why not now? Even I was in the US for 3 months, just flew there with no plan what to do there. Go on a trip, do herd sheeps in New Zealand, fight with beggars in South Africa, …”

These words were like drugs for an ex-addict.

But I think I still want to wait with “the Trip”. But I definitly want to do it. Would be nice to “herd sheeps in New Zealand”, but not now, not this year, not next year. Maybe after that. In the meantime I can do smaller travels and hear all the great stories Couchsurfers tell me.

Short Update

September 10th, 2006

Hi People,
that is one thing someone should not do. Make a blog, write something in it for some days and then no longer write anything.
I’m sorry for not updating my blog soo long, but I definitly want to keep the blog. So look here from time to time, or better subscribe to the blog via RSS.

Well I’m home from my travels, Czech Republic and Poland were very nice. Since the weekend in Vienna between Poland and Czech Republic, I was every Saturday in a different city. First Prague, then Linz (at the Linzer Klangwolke) and yesterday Graz.
But that was it now for some time, the OEBB Summer Ticket is no longer valid and I’m definitly looking forward to the next full weekends in Vienna (of which I only had 1 since the start of my travel).
Maybe next week I’ll write about the cities I visited and some experiences while travelling.

About the SPAM: I hate Spam. You can’t do a Wiki, Bulettin Board or a Blog without someone finding a possibility to SPAM it.
At the moment I also have some problems with my webspace, but I hope that I can next week upload the AntiSPAM Plugin and I hope it does help. For the moment I deleted all the SPAM (I didn’t know that I’m still that good in SQL :-) )

So for the moment, that’s all.

Travel Plan Update

August 14th, 2006

Hello,

due to the fact that I wanted to stay one day longer in Gdansk, I’ve changed my travel plan a little bit.

Here is the new plan:
14.08. Wroclaw
15.08. - 18.08. Krakow
20.08. - 23.08. Ceske Budejovice
23.08. Cesky Krumlov
23.08. - 28.08. Prague
28.08. - 31.08. Brno

First 5 days in Poland

August 9th, 2006

I’m currently on day 5 of my trip doing a stopover in Sopot, a very nice city very close to Gdansk. One of my reasons to visit Gdansk was to see the baltic sea. Sopot has a very nice & long sand beach, perfect spot to relax a little bit from sightseeing. So what did I do the last 5 days?

After going out on friday to drink some last beers in Vienna, I packed my bag Saturday in the morning and headed to the train station. After some hours in the train I arrived in Warsaw and a little bit later I was in the flat of my host Kuba. Tania from Portugal made us a great portuguese dinner, many thanks for that.
Some beers with friends of Kuba and a rainy night later, I did go to the “Warsaw Uprising Museum”. It is about Events in World War II, when Poland was invaded & occupied by Germany & Russia. Due to some reason, there was free entry and a very long queue to get into the museum. After visiting this huge museum, I did some sightseeing in Old Town of Warsaw. Looking to find a nice place for dinner and equiped only with a stupid “Lonely Planet” book about Eastern Europe, I decided to go in a very old restaurant at Castle Place. If you are in Poland, try the “Sour Borsch Soup”, really something special.
So after a good meal, I decided to ask the waiter for a nice pub. What a waste of time. He told me to look in the city center (not old town center), there are hundreds of pubs. After walking around that center without finding much, I did go back to Kubas place, to find out that he doesn’t know anything about “hundrds of Pubs” in Warsaw. I don’t know what the waiter was talking about, maybe another city.

On monday I tried to get a reservation for the train to Gdansk, but without luck. Without showing my Euro Domino Ticket, no reservation. Most of the afternoon I spent on preparing and publishing the blog post about Warsaw. Blogging needs more time than I expected, but I think the result is good.
Monday evening, which was my last evening in Warsaw, I met with 2 Colleagues from Work to go out. We did go to a pub directly outside the city walls, called “Kompania Piwna”. Because of the Way, this place and the people there fascinated me, I will soon write a own blog post about it.

Tuesday morning, I packed my stuff to say goodbye to Kuba and Warsaw. Thanks Kuba for the hospitality, if you are ever near Vienna contact me!
After finally getting a reservation to Gdansk )this time without having to show the Euro Domino Pass, now that I had it with me) it was for the wrong train. But that didn’t matter, it was just a slower train and needed 20 minutes longer.
The place on the reservation turned out to be in a smokers compartment. And there were 8 seats, but luckily 3 stayed free the whole time.
After some time without anyone smoking, the first person did take cigarettes out of her bag. But what happens? She goes out of the compartment and smokes outside. Also the other ones. I heard this is usual in Poland, even though there are smoker compartments no one smokes inside them. Also in the restaurant cars it’s not allowed to smoke. And also not in and near bus stations. So in the subject of smoking in public, Poland is much more strict than Austria.
After arriving in Gdansk, I could not get out of amazement. Gdansk has a really different look than the other cities in Poland I know till now. The buildings here look more like in Amsterdam.
In the evening, I took a taxi (due to the lack of a good city map) to my host Inga and Marek. There we had a great vegetarian dinner and looked at the pictures of their trip to Ukraine & Lithuania.

While talking to people from Poland the last days and combining it with what I saw, it looks as if the polish President & Government have a very strange interpretation of Democracy. Especially younger people are not happy about that.

On friday, I’ll go to Szczecin for one night and then to Poznan, where some people already organize a small Couchsurfing Meeting. On Sunday, my trip will take me to the beautiful city of Krakow. That’s all for now, clouds are coming, so I think I’ll finish this entry and leave the beautiful beach of Sopot for some sightseeing in Gdansk.

Warsaw

August 7th, 2006

I’m now in Warsaw for around 2 days and leaving tomorrow. So what to say about Warsaw?

Warsaw is a nice and relaxing city. It was a good choice as the start for my 4 Week long trip. Warsaw has a nice old town called “Stare Miasto”. But most parts of this old town is not that old, simply because most of the buildings were destroyed in World War II and were after the end of the war, rebuilt from the scratch. In old town, you find many street performers, but mostly musicians (one really cool exception is the funny “Executioners Group”). Old town is that part of the city, why I call this city relaxing. Even though there are many tourist around, it’s nice to walk around or sit in the garden of a pub, have a drink or two. And it seems like there is music everywhere and if the street performers would not play only for money, but play because they love music. A small tip for budget travellers: There are not many restaurants in old town which are not very expensive. In general the prices for food & drinks in Warsaw are not that much cheaper than in Austria. But this city should also be the most expensive city in Poland. I will see.

As in many cities, there are many old & beautiful churches in Warsaw. One of the differences here in Warsaw (and probably also in the rest of Poland) is the admiration of the “Black Madonna” of Częstochowa. Also there are many monuments about the “Warsaw Uprising”, if you have time, take a look at the Warsaw Uprising Museum, it offers much information about this historical event.

Here in Warsaw, you also find big shopping & cinema centers, like Aupark in Bratislava or Donauzentrum/Donauplexx in Vienna. The strange thing here is that if you look at the shops, they are mostly the same chains as you find in Austria, except that they also open on sunday.

What didn’t I like about Warsaw? This city is (in some parts) a maze. This starts at the underground level of the Central Train Station and goes all the way to the old town. Why? None of the main train lines stop somewhere near the old town. Which would not be a big problem, if there wouldn’t be no signs pointing out where old town is. There are signs to old town, but they only start approximatley 5 minutes walking distance from old town. I think if that even if I would be here for one week, I still would get lost or have to ask people for direction, either in the underground or on my way to old town. :-)
So that’s one of the advantages of Vienna, 3 main subway lines have stops in the first district, so no tourist can say it’s hard to find.

That’s all for the moment, thanks for reading this long text. Greetings to Vienna or wherever you are at the moment. Tomorrow I’m heading north to Gdansk and the baltic sea. Hopefully it doesn’t rain much the next days, wet beach is not that nice. Hope I will find time in Gdansk to upload some pictures, so stay tuned.

Greetings from Warsaw, Stefan

The Trip

August 6th, 2006

Hi People,

I arrived in Warsaw yesterday and will write something about this nice city later.

But now to an interesting question: Ever thought about doing “THE Trip”?

So what do I mean with THE Trip. I mean a Trip through different countries which you most probably do only once in your live. A Trip with an either unlimited duration or which takes you at least around 1 year away from home.

Many Couchsurfers I’ve met till now, either have already done such a long trip or are currently doing it or plan to do it someday. Some even sold all their stuff, rented or sold their apartment and go to a trip around the world.

My opinion is, that this is an experience you only could get once in your life. Seeing so many Countries, ways of life and meeting many people changes yourself.

I’m not sure yet if I would want to do such a trip. I want to wait till the end of my 4 Week Poland & Czech Republic Trip, but the thought of it is very tempting. :)

So give this question some thougts and maybe write some comment.
